Well, I didn't get a lot of time at home nor a lot done at home: attempts at unpacking from a total of 3 trips and 67 days in NY, Leona's birthday dinner at Zehnders, Jaime's birthday lunch at Sagebrush Cantina, Dad's appointment to the urologist with good results, Jaime and Leona's birthday party, a wonderful dinner with hosts Linda and Glenn, trips to the funeral home to pay our respects, lots and lots of cooking to prepare for our trip, and then on the road again.
They say you can't keep a good man down? Does that mean Ray is a good man, because he always wants to be "up" on skiis--summer or winter? We left at 5:44 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 24th and drove approximately 779 miles to a Comfort Inn in Omaha, Nebraska, with a one-hour stop in Des Moines where we walked a recreational biking/walking trail. We were enroute to Copper Mountain, CO, where Ray acquired a 4-night stay at Copper Mountain Inn condos right in the village. We had perfect roads until we got only 8 miles from Copper where they were getting snow. We had stopped in Dillon to grab a few groceries and dinner, but Pug Ryan's no longer had their $6 burger and fry special, and Arapahoe Cafe no longer had their Mexican special on Monday night, so we decided to head to Frisco to Moose Jaw which was rated as the best burger in Summit County. We were about 1/2 mile from the exit when we were forced to a dead stop along with an entire freeway of 3 lanes.
It took us 50 minutes to travel 3 miles from Dillon to Frisco. We later learned that a Fire-Rescue Chief was responding to a 4-car accident when she heard an out-of-control semi-truck blaring his horn as he skidded sideways toward the rescue vehicle. The chief narrowly jumped to safety. The semi crashed into the rear of the rescue vehicle and pushed it into the original 4 cars. Within minutes a CO State Patrol Trooper lost control on the ice while approaching the scene and collided with the left front driver’s side door of the Chief’s vehicle.
We got to Moose Jaw and knew by Ray's discussion with police at the exit we were forced to take that we would be unable to get to Copper for at least a couple of hours. So, we had our beer and burgers and fries and proceeded to wait for traffic to start to move. After waiting through a second beer, and more waiting we saw the traffic begin to move. It was slow going from Frisco to Copper, but we finally made it around 8:30. We thought we would be eating early--around 4--but didn't eat 'til 6:15 or after and certainly got to the condo hours later than anticipated. But--we were blessed with a safe trip--can't ask for more than that.
Ray was in heaven on Tuesday when he was able to get out on the 11 inches of fresh powder from the night before. He ranks his skiing that day among his top 5 days of skiing ever! He is continuing to enjoy the mountain and his thighs are reminding him of all the fun he is having. I am laying low and doing strength building aerobics--trying to get my strength and stamina back into my back and recoup my knees. My knee snapped backward while we were walking on that flat asphalt trail in Des Moines, so slow and steady will hopefully be the key to getting back to my normal. Gotta get ready for G-O-L-F!
We went back to Dillon last night and had our $5 burger and fries at Arapahoe Cafe and grabbed a couple groceries. We will be eating in most of the time as it save bundles of money!
I did speak to all of the girls while we were on our way and all seem to be doing just fine. I spoke with Becky on Monday, the 25th, and things are progressing well, but she is really, really busy. Things take so much longer to do when you have so many limitations, but she is doing as she is allowed. She sounds happy and well. She has promised that she will call in the troops--hee hee--if she needs assistance with anything. We IMd this a.m. and she continues to be doing well. The kids are doing great! Lexie and Abbey are the official driveway crew! They clear the end of the driveway where the grader throws the road snow when they need to get out.
Well, I have to get out to take a couple of pictures to post with this blog--so, later! I will post good piccies of the condo and slopes. We are headed out around noon for lunch at Mi Zuppa—voted best lunch in Dillon—before heading to Winter Park where we will be for another week in CO.
